Personal Project PROGRESS: Grannies : Devon Bragg

Personal Project: Grannies
So my personal project is a visual journalism and character design project combo. I grew up with a grandmother who had alzheimers so I only knew the disease, not the person. So for my project, I'm going around asking people from both MICA and Baltimore about the fun, quirky, funny or odd things their grandmothers do. I'm still experimenting with the projects set ups esspecially with adding text.
Grandma 1: Olivia -83
Interviewed Granddaughter: Allison Hammle, 21 year old Towson Student
-Described as having a "Gru" nose.
-Always wears winter clothes, including a scarf which smells of cats which she doesn' have.
-Wears an awful looking denim striped skirt
-Wears white velcrow shoes that she never takes off
-constantly has too much blush and lipstick on

Grandma 2: Nanna Nancy -92
Interviewed Grandson : David Weber , theory student at John Hopkins
-converted to being a nudist at 74
-Has false eyelashes on constantly  that "touch her eyebrow they are so long".
-smokes like a chimney
-Owns a stuffed Jaguar which she constantly sits on, and keeps as a "conversation starter"
-"I can tell you, I love her, but I'm giving her a shirt for christmas I swear. Little too much for me. "
Grandma 3: Geema Rose - 103
Interviewed granddaughter: Emily ( off the street)
-"I swear the only thing i see is the sweater. I have no clue what she looks like nowadays, she pulls the sweater up to her eyebrows. And she is an italian mother, that should tell you alot about her personality. She'll hit you with that cane faster than a racecar. But we all love her. I think. Probably would love her more if she changed the sweater."
Grandma 4: Mama-Tu - 80
Interviewed granddaughter: Hope Williams (off street)
-" well. what can i say...shes certainly a character. But she has this stupid parrot, that is always on her shoulder, and it just stares you down. Really annoying actually, it's so loud. But so is she, so they are quite the pair. Her pants constantly fall down, but hey, what can you do. "
Grandma 5: Mi-Mi - 97
Interviewed grandson: Everett Jung (off street)
-"she is amzing. I love her so much, she so short and so huggable! But very..blind. Although she cares not to admit it, and dismisses you everytime you bring it up. She is an amazing cook, but she misplaces the food all the time, and often just brings you a empty plate. It's cute. "

Grandma 6: Shirley - 73
Interviewed granddaughter: Andy (Towson)

-"We call her shirley missing, because she is often surely missing. she's always driving off on her motorcycle for hours, sometimes she goes gambling. Comes back with 16 cars, then has only 2 the next day. She's definitely a wild thing. "

Grandma 7: Janice - 85
Interviewed granddaughter: Kendra (off street)
"She has a bazillion cats. It's honestly unbelievable. They are all feral things that look like they've seen some deep shit. Like, they have eyes of owls, and they just stare. Like, they are the creepiest animals I've ever seen. And she just lets them lay all over her, she looks like a Chewbacca after they get off. I'm glad i'm allergic because it gives me an excuse not to meet the cats again."

Grandma 8 : Denise - 67

Interviewed grandson: Anthony Travors (McDaniel College)

"My grandma, was actually my grandpa 3 years ago. She was a kickass grandpa, took me fishing and everything, but she is even better as a grandma. Burns cooking a lot though. I swear she could burn water."

Grandma 9: Nacie - 69
Interviewed granddaughter: Lindsey (of street)

"A little crazy, but a golden soul. She loves rock and roll and screamo music. Her favorite band is "Panic at the Disco" currently. she's pretty good at singing too, don't know how her vocal cords haven't burned up but there you have it. he currently lives with us in the basement, you know how normally teen bands bother the mom of the family? Well we can honestly say our grandma has a band and keeps us up at 3am."

Grandma 10: Ann - 79
Interviewed granddaughter: Rian (off street)

"It's pretty sad, she used to be hilarious and loving and caring. With Alzheimers, she's a shell of what she once was. But the one odd thing is she firmly believes she is a mermaid. She is constantly in the water, and constantly watches h20. It's very hard to get her out since she believes she'll die out of the water. But these days, whatever makes her happy. So we normally just let her be. "

Grandma 11: Martha Thatch - deceased
interviewed granddaughter: Molly Lee  (Hopkins)

"My Nan just died the other day actually. I would love to talk about her. She used to be on a black womans basketball team, and she was amazing. Kinda made her cocky, she would always bring up how she was the only one in the family that could shoot hoops. My fondest memory is when i was young, i couldn't see her face she was so tall, all i saw were her legs and her long arms. She was a great lady, i will miss her dearly."

Grandma 12: Nana Reese - 82
interviewed grandson: Jeff (off street)

"My grandmother had a phase when all she wanted was to ride horses. She wasn't good at it though. She bought a stable, 20 horses, and several hundred acres for this dream of hers. Most of the horses were good, except one that we named "meditation" after the horse from Auntie Mame. The horse was crazy and the only speed it knew was gallop...but my granny was determined. A year later she got addicted to roller blading. "
