feminism with a twist

i decided to push forward with a different take on feminism by choosing to do an illustration about transsexuals. in reference to the documentary trantasia i wanted to do an illustration that would serve as a spread in a magazine. this spread would be an exposé on how a lot of men (especially younger men) are opting to become women for skewed reasons (to be more objectified, to feel beautiful by being more overtly sexual/hyperfeminine).

to become a woman is to not just feel pretty, desirable, and objectified. going through a sex change should transcend anything superficial and it should be because one would be a psychologically-sound human being that could reach her goals to the fullest potential upon completing the transition. i wanted to have the magazine article have a fold out spread that further explains how men could transition to become women because they would ultimately have a more empowering platform.

here's what the illustration of the foldout would look like:

...and if there was to be a logotype for a fictional organization that would help transition post-op transsexuals, it would be probably be something like this:

DeAnna - Feminism Project

Hey so...this is the book cover for the instruction manual for to-be husbands preparing the home for their working wives. I originally planned for a series of spot illustrations but I was a little over-ambitious. So instead I made a book cover and I might create a nice typography-only piece listing all the "tips"...

Lakota Woman by Mary Brave Bird

I decided to do a book cover for Mary Brave Bird's first novel, Lakota Woman. It sort of looks like a movie poster, actually. The autobiography tells of her upbringing, including her struggle with poverty, identity, and racial and sexual harassment as an American Indian. The figures below her represent pivotal people in her life, including her mother and husband.

bitchslap

so here's a pdf of bitchslap the feminist zine i've been working on.
i uploaded it for download here https://viewer.zoho.com/docs/bmLvg
but it will only be on that site for a month.

so you can read it online here http://issuu.com/akcrooks/docs/bitchslap
if you want.

but you have to sign up for an account with issuu, the account is free and the website is pretty cool. you can publish books, magazines, articles, etc. and read stuff that other people have posted.

here's the cover and the interior illustration of dolly parton.

DeAnna - Sardines!

I've decided to post my Sardine Competition entries here on the blog. The medium is a mixture of paper and digital coloring.

kristina's logotypes and baccasine sketches

These are ideas for my logotype. I used the English as well as the Sioux versions of Mary Brave Bird, who is the woman my assignment will be focused on.
In Sioux, her name is "Zitkala Ohitike," which means Brave Bird:
