Josh Allain - The New Yorker

The person that I chose was Bill Hicks (12/16/1961—02/26/1994). He was an outspoken comedian from Houston, Texas, whose stand-up consisted of discussions about politics, religion, philosophy, and the War on Drugs. He is absolutely BRILLIANT!!!

The New Yorker (Francis Igot)

so i initially wanted my new yorker cover on the egyptian student to look like this:

...but that didn't work out because it sent an ambiguous message. is it for supporting reform/improvements in freedom of expression in egypt or it is against (militaristic subject matter).

so, i scaled down the stark military figures and just focused on egyptian rally goers wearing aliyaa's red flower to signify a protest supporting her bravery in challenging the limits of freedom of expression in egypt. it still seems ambiguous, but not as much as the first cover.

Kristina's New Yorker

The artist I chose is a british musician named Katie Jane Garside. Her latest music project is called "Ruby Throat". some links to music videos and songs:

in the arms of flowers
symphony of ghosts
acapella

She has such a rich world of imagery that she's created through her songs and art and "look" that inspires me, so this was mostly an experiment, using medium and different techniques I'm not usually familiar with, in finding a way to represent visually an aspect of her character, essence, emotion.

new yorker sketch - aliaa magda (francis igot)

for the new yorker assignment, i did a digital collage/sketch of the aliaa magda on top of a scene of an angry mob. i was going to go on the lines of this when i illustrate it, but this is what i have in mind for now.

indigenous voices (francis igot)

i wanted to make these travel posters that showed a little bit of the cultural practices of the cordillera (igorot) people of the philippines to kind of boost a curiosity in eco-tourism.
